Why Startups Fail
Beginner · 6 min read
The recurring failure modes, in rough order of frequency.
The most common cause is building something the market does not sufficiently want. This usually presents as an inability to grow efficiently rather than as an absence of customers entirely.
Running out of capital is the second: not raising the next round in time, or scaling a cost structure ahead of the revenue that was supposed to support it. Founder conflict is a distant but persistent third, and it is the failure mode least visible from the outside.
Competition and technical failure account for far fewer losses than most people expect. Companies mostly do not lose races. They run out of road.
